Sony VAIO TR Series feature integrated video camera, super-bright screens & high speed WiFi
Brussels, 24 May 2004 – Sony announces the launch of the new Sony VAIO TR Series ultraportable laptop designed for the travelling professional.
Despite its compact dimensions, the Sony VAIO PCG-TR5MP (PCGTR5MP) is brimming with features more normally associated with full-sized notebooks. In particular, the PCG-TR5MP is the first Sony VAIO TR Series notebook to feature a built-in DVD burner, providing users with a new level of convenience and flexibility on the move.
Widescreen Sony VAIO PCG-TR5MP is ideal for watching DVDs
Its bright, wide format screen means the Sony VAIO PCG-TR5MP is also ideal for watching films on DVD, making it a perfect antidote to long flights or hotel television.
Sony VAIO PCG-TR5MP Ultraportable features Wireless-G and Bluetooth
Other key capabilities of the Sony VAIO PCG-TR5MP ultraportable include both high-speed, cable-free networking powered by Intel’s latest Centrino technology, and Bluetooth for seamless communication with phones and handhelds.
What’s more, users can shoot motion video, take still pictures and even video-conference with the PCG-TR5MP’s unique integrated Motion Eye digital video camera.
Motion Eye literally adds a new dimension to the user experience. Documents can be captured in seconds and then electronically shared with others, meetings can be videoed, presentations enlivened with video clips. The versatility of the camera is only amplified by features like the DVD-RW drive and wireless networking. Captured video can easily be burned onto DVD using the exclusive Sony Click to DVD software, or shared with colleagues across wired or wireless networks.
Whatever appears on the Sony VAIO PCG-TR5MP’s screen looks better thanks to new technology that boosts brightness and contrast and enriches colours for a vivid, lifelike display. The special wide LCD also provides more room to work and an ideal way of viewing wide screen DVD movies.
The Sony VAIO PCG-TR5MP notebook is as appealing on the outside as it is sophisticated internally thanks to Sony’s commitment to design and detail. The extra attention ensures that the Sony VAIO PCG-TR5MP has the style to stand out, and equally, to be at home anywhere.
Low weight & long battery life make Sony VAIO PCG-TR5MP an ideal Ultraportable
. The Sony VAIO PCG-TR5MP has a low carrying weight of just 1.4kg, making it ideally suited as a traveling companion. To make sure users on the road can get the maximum amount done, battery power is conserved and running time extended by the ultra-low voltage (ULV) Intel Pentium M processor.
Each Sony VAIO PCG-TR5MP notebook is supplied with a comprehensive selection of software designed to help users make the most of its varied features. Productivity is handled by Microsoft® Works 7 applications suite, but this is only part of the added value on offer. Numerous Sony applications like PictureGear Studio for image editing and DVGate Plus for video/still capture are also provided, as well as the exclusive Adobe Companion Pack for VAIO. This includes powerful tools like Adobe® Photoshop® Album Starter Edition for managing image libraries and Adobe® Photoshop® Elements 2.0 for picture editing. In addition, the Adobe Companion Pack provides users with Adobe Acrobat Elements, which can convert files created by Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel and Powerpoint into the Acrobat document reader format for widespread electronic distribution.
“This is a portable for people who will not settle for the average or ordinary,” comments Jun Koyama, European Sales & Marketing Director for Sony’s IT Products. “It pushes the boundaries, which is what makes it special. Even so, the idea behind it is pure VAIO: bringing together audio-visual and IT in ways that make life – and work – easier.”
NOTES TO THE EDITOR
The Sony VAIO PCG-TR5MP notebook in detail:
Core specification
The Sony VAIO PCG-TR5MP notebook is powered by the latest generation of Ultra Low Voltage (ULV) Intel Pentium M notebook processor, running at 1.1GHz. ULV processors are even more economical with battery power than the standard mobile Intel Pentium M processor because they have a specially reduced core voltage and can step internal power consumption down still further whenever system activity is light. In addition, the CPU offers the benefit of a performance-enhancing 1MB of on-die Level 2 cache, twice the size of the L2 cache on the previous generation of mobile Pentium CPUs. A full 512MB of fast 266MHz double data rate (DDR) SDRAM memory is fitted as standard to ensure that applications have the necessary headroom to run smoothly. Plentiful data storage is provided by a 40GB hard disk.
New screen technology
Sony’s exclusive new screen technology is enhanced with an anti-reflection surface layer, which cuts reflection without scattering the light coming from the screen itself. Standard anti-reflection coatings suffer from this side effect, which causes light to bleed into areas of the picture, which should be dark. This reduces the overall range of contrast, and both and dark areas appear slightly washed out. Sony screens are inherently very brightly lit, and offer very strong contrast thanks to the superior anti-reflection layer. Blacks appear truly black, and colours are richer and more vibrant, creating a vivid, lifelike display.
Wide screen advantage
Instead of conventional 1024 x 768 XGA, the Sony VAIO PCG-TR5MP laptop’s 10.6-inch diagonal screen offers Wide XGA (WXGA) 1280 x 768 resolution. This yields about 25% more workspace area and a wider Windows Desktop, ideal for running applications side by side or viewing large documents with minimal scrolling. This style of display is also perfectly suited to viewing wide screen format DVD movies, ensuring that the PCG-TR5MP is as good for relaxing as it is for business.
Burn, burn, burn
The Sony VAIO PCG-TR5MP’s integral DVD drive supports the DVD-RW format, offering maximum compatibility with consumer DVD players. Burn speed is 2x for both –R and –RW, and DVD play speed is up to 8x.
Visually enhanced: the Motion Eye
The Sony VAIO PCG-TR5MP offers users the unique advantage of Motion Eye, a built-in 307 kilopixel (640 x 480 VGA) digital video camera, discretely mounted above the screen. An articulated mount allows the camera to face toward or away from the user as required. When in video mode the camera runs at 15 fps, and stills can be captured at the touch of a button beside the screen. There’s a manual focus ring to ensure crisp pictures every time, and the potent combination of VAIO and Adobe image editing software supplied with the PCG-TR5MP means taking the picture is just the start of what is possible. When it comes to motion video, things get even better. With the 54 megabit/second connection speed afforded by the 802.11g standard, the Sony VAIO PCG-TR5MP can even deliver wireless video conferencing easily (additional software required).
Connect and share
The Sony VAIO PCG-TR5MP notebook has both an i.LINK (IEEE1394 FireWire) port for high bandwidth connections to digital camcorders, LCD projectors and scanners, and a slot for Sony Memory Stick PRO cards. With an upper limit of 1GB, Memory Stick PRO provides users with huge storage capacity for images, video, music and data, as well as improved transfer rates for effortless exchange of information with other devices.
VAIO Essentials for the Sony VAIO PCG-TR5MP notebook
To ensure users get the most from Sony VAIO PCG-TR5MP notebooks, Sony has produced a range of optional accessories specifically for the machine. These include a tough slip cover (PCGA-CK5T) designed to protect the notebook while adding very little to its overall size and weight. Regular travelers might also be interested in either the replacement standard battery pack (PCGA-BP2T) or the extended life pack (PCGA-BP3T) capable of powering the Sony VAIO PCG-TR5MP notebook for up to 8 hours. There’s even a tiny but hand-pleasing optical mouse (PCGA-UMS3B) designed to make prolonged periods of use as comfortable as possible. If required, on-board memory can be increased to a total of 1GB by the addition of a 512MB DDR SDRAM module (PCGA-MM512U).
