'CAN YOU HANDLE IT' at the WALKMAN Gallery
CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF THE SONY WALKMAN AND THE DARK SIDE OF ROCK - LAUNCHES 10TH NOVEMBER 2005
On 10th November 2005 rock music's most powerful and exciting photography will be unveiled at Sony WALKMAN Gallery to celebrate the launch of the new Sony WALKMAN MP3.
To celebrate the theme of the new Sony WALKMAN, each photograph captures a dark and gritty moment of music, from images of David Bowie at the Berlin wall, to Aaliyah just before her tragic death, Ian Brown in Jamaica after being lost for days, to live sets of Queen, Bob Marley and Guns 'N' Roses. The event will be supported by a live set from Madness' Chas Smash.
The 70's, 80's and 90's have played host to the rawest, grittiest, and most memorable performances in rock history. From the topless Iggy Pop dripping with sweat in a manic stage performance in '78, to Kurt Cobain smashing his guitar onstage in 1990 before breaking down in tears, and Anthony Keidis from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers on stage in 1988 wearing nothing but a sock to conceal his manhood, these moments will be remembered for years to come as the darkest in rock.
What better location for such a grimy show than the original site of the famous Proud Gallery in Camden, London. The Sony WALKMAN Gallery exhibition will be launched in classic 'Proud' style with an exclusive party on 10th November 2005. Celebrities, Sony BMG artists, members of the press and people from the music industry will be invited to see the unveiling of this exciting collection of photographs.
The Photographers
Hamish Brown
Award winning photographer Hamish Brown has forged a successful career in both the editorial and advertising media. He has shot extensively in the worlds of music and sport - photographing a wide range of celebrities including Ronaldo, Luis Figo, Jonny Wilkinson, Iggy pop, U2, Robbie Williams, Coldplay, Missy Elliot, Jay Z, Christian Slater, Nicole Kidman, and Daryl Hannah.
Steve Double
Steve Double has been working as a professional photographer for twenty years.
During that time he has spent one and a half minutes with Bill Gates, been sworn at by Ken Dodd, kept Public Enemy waiting, drunk Caiprinhas with Nick Cave in Sao Paolo, scored for Oasis in New York, waited for six hours for The Spice Girls, travelled to America eighty five times, blagged an upgrade from Richard Branson, got Jarvis and Jo Brand into bed, been fruity with Dame Edna, fallen in love, danced the night away, watered the plants and put the cats out.
Denis O'Regan
Denis O'Regan began working life as a city insurance broker, but soon began moonlighting as a photographer for rock bands- often covering up to seven gigs a week. After his first picture was published by Jackie Magazine - a shot of Queen at the Hammersmith Odeon taken on a £5 camera smuggled in under his jacket - it was all uphill from there. Chucking in his job in the city, Denis became NME's most prolific contributor. Going on tour with acts such as Queen, Thin Lizzy, The Rolling Stones, Duran Duran and David Bowie and covering momentous events such as the original Live Aid and the recent Live 8, Denis is one of music's most well known and admired photographers.
The Sony WALKMAN revolutionised the way people listened to music when it was launched on 1st July 1979. For the first time, music fans could listen to their favourite bands whenever and wherever they wanted, meaning that the WALKMAN quickly became an iconic symbol of youth culture. The WALKMAN has evolved along with music over three decades, with various incarnations such as the DISCMAN and the MINIDISC.
Now Sony has unveiled a brand new range of WALKMAN MP3 players - again redefining portable music as it did 26 years ago. Available in 20GB and 6GB versions, the WALKMAN comes in a range of colours (violet, silver and pink), has a bright white display and comes with matching earphones.
